Durham
is another city that is well worth a visit. Found in the North East of
England it has a fine old cathedral, the remains of a castle (now used
as part of the university) and some wonderful views from the river.
The
cathedral school has had many famous Old Boys. The best known recent ones
are probably Rowan Atkinson and Tony Blair. There must be something in the
air there that encourages comedians!
The
previous Bishop of Durham caused a great deal of controversy when he cast
doubt on certain aspects of Christian beliefs. Nothing too major, the Virgin
birth, the resurrection, you know the sort of thing. It was hardly surprising
that the fire at York Minster shortly after his enthronement (caused by
lightening) was blamed on an act of God.
Belvoir
Castle
Belvoir
Castle is situated in the beautiful Vale of Belvoir in Lincolnshire. The
castle is in someway more like a stately home and is largely intact. It
also contains a military museum. Probably the best thing about it though
are the grounds and views over the vale.
Just
one more thing - Belvoir is pronounced Beaver! The thought of visiting
the Vale of Beaver seems to be extremely amusing to some people!
What is
Duncan doing in the bushes?!!!
Hampton
Court Palace
I consider
Hampton Court to be about the most impressive of the old Royal palaces.
The building was started by Henry VII but largely remodelled by Henry
VIII. It is in excellent condition and most of it is open to the public.
The grounds are exceptionally well kept. It is situated just out of London
on the bank of the Thames which makes for an attractive location. It's
not surprising that it was Henry VIII's favourite palace.
